Namibian Desert & Dune Safari - Self Drive

Depart from London Gatwick on Air Namibia, direct to Windhoek on an evening overnight flight.

Arrive in the Capital City, Windhoek the following morning where our representative will meet you and assist you with the collection of your hire car. They will also give you your Personal Travel Digest which gives you detailed driving instructions for every leg of your journey. The pack also contains local information on places to visit and see along the way.

Leave the airport following the road North past Windhoek and onto your first destination, Okonjima.

Okonjima lies nestled in the unspoilt beauty of the Omboroko mountains, part of the well known Waterberg Plateau. In the Herero language Okonjima means 'place of the baboons'. Okonjima is so much more than just a luxury lodge. It is also home to the AfriCat Foundation, which is committed to researching and rehabilitating Namibia’s threatened wild cat population. AfriCat is known internationally after featuring in an award-winning documentary filmed for the Discovery Channel.
Okonjima’s luxury Bush Camp, 3 km from Main Camp, is situated on the edge of a wilderness area. Each exclusive chalet enjoys complete privacy and is a combination of earthy, ochre walls and khaki-green canvas, under a thatched roof.

Bush Camp has 8 luxury, thatched African-style chalets, a secluded swimming pool, mini-bar, telephone, private safe, a queen-size bed as well as a 3/4 bed in each chalet. The front 180° of canvas paneling may be rolled up for a spectacular view. All chalets are very well spaced with 80m -100m between each other. Please note that children under the age of 12 years are not permitted at the Camp.

Two nights stays at Okonjima. Full board incl activities.

Your next destination is Etosha National Park where you will stay for 3 nights. As a National Park you are able to self drive around the park, using our maps or take one of the organised game drives from the Lodge or the Parks Office.

We can offer you accommodation in one of the Government run Luxury Cottages which are located inside the park (in fenced rest camp areas) on a self catering basis. The rest camps have swimming pools, restaurants and each cottage has a kitchen a patio area and barbeque.

Alternatively you can stay in one of the Lodges outside the Park fences, just a couple of minutes drive.

3 nights at a restcamp cottage or Game Lodge such as Mushara.

From Etosha you will head south west in the direction of Swakopmund. This is a long drive to do in one go, so we recommend a night stop over at Erongo Wilderness Lodge.

1 night at Erongo Wilderness Camp on a half board basis.

Continue south west to the coastal town of Swakopmund, the adventure capital of Namibia. This quaint town has a very Germanic feel about it, with tyrolean style architecture and cafes selling cakes and apple strudels!

Quad biking in the dunes, sand boarding and sky diving are just some of the high adrenalin activities you can try.If you like things at a slower pace, there are numerous excursions including a boat trip to see the seals and birds at Walvis Bay, a light aircraft trip north along the skeleton coast or down south over the red dunes. There is plenty do for all ages, and even the town itself has much to offer with a great craft market and good seafood restaurants.

2 nights at the Swakopmund Hotel on a bed and breakfast basis.

Leave Swakopmund and head south into the Namib-Naukluft region. If you are lucky you will catch sight of zebra, gemsbok and springbok as you travel through the semi-dessert landscape.

Arrive at your final destination the Kulala Desert Camp.

Situated on over 21 000 hectares (46 000 acres) of private property and bordering the Namib Naukluft Park, Kulala Desert Lodge lies in the heart of the Namib and offers magnificent views of the famous red dunes of Sossusvlei, as well as magnificent mountainous scenery and vast open plains.

The main lodge has a lounge, bar, dining area and plunge pool, with a view of the dunes. The veranda overlooks a waterhole. Early morning guided game drives to the spectacular dunes are through a private gate on the Tsauchab River.

Game drives and walks are also offered on the private reserve. Here, guests can enjoy incredible views, desert game and smaller desert fauna and flora.

Another option, at an extra cost, is early morning ballooning, beginning at first light. The 60-minute balloon safari offers a truly unique experience to soar silently above the magnificent sand dunes and desert - with a champagne breakfast served at your landing site.

2 nights accommodation on full board with some game and dune viewing activities at Kulala Desert Lodge.

A final morning in the dunes before you will drive back to Windhoek. This is a straight forward drive north and well signposted. You will return your hire car to hertz at the Airport before boarding your evening, overnight flight back to London.
