Namibia

Truly awe-inspiring, Namibia wins hands-down for scenery. Shimmering dunes, Big 5 wildlife, clear blue skies and a wild, rugged coastline, you can experience this magical country with a self-drive holiday. Safe, good roads and stunning scenery, it is ideal for a solo African adventure, but if you prefer, we can arrange a guided tour instead.

Start in the capital city, Windhoek and then head north to visit the Africat Foundation at Okonjima, home to numerous species of big cats, including cheetahs, caracal, leopards and lions. Get up close with some of these impressive pussy cats.

A short drive north is the Etosha National Park, stay in one of the sumptuous Lodges that border Etosha or in the Park's own chalets. Take your drinks after dinner to the floodlit waterhole and see who else turns up to the party!

Head west into Damaraland, where you can track wild Black Rhino on foot and watch out for desert elephants roaming the scrubland. The area is also home to the enigmatic Himba tribe, whose villages you can visit. Their distinctive appearance follows a strict code, with each piece of jewellry and adornment significant of their social status. Ladies: great for jewellery shopping!

As you head south, don't miss the Bushmen's cave art at Twyfelfontein before you reach Swakopmund, a charming seaside resort and the adventure capital of Namibia. Try sandboarding, sky-diving or quadbiking in the dunes or head to the sea for canoeing and boat trips to the coastal seal colonies.

From Swakopmund, treat yourself to a flight over the shipwrecks of the Skeleton Coast before heading south over the stunning Namib Desert and the famous red dunes at Sesriem. Make sure you get up early to see the sunrise in the magnificent Sossusvlei valley - beautiful. At night, sit out out under Africa's most impressive light show, the southern constellations. Some lodges will make up your bed on the roof so you can drift off to asleep under the stars.

Treat yourself and finish your holiday with an overnight trip on the Desert Express, take the luxurious sleeper train from Swakopmund back to Windhoek.

We love Namibia, and we think you will too - discover it before the crowds catch on.
