Situated at the northern end of the Kruger National Park, in the Limpopo Province, is the sleepy town of Phalaborwa, home to Hans Merensky.
Originally the play ground for local mine workers, the Hans Merensky Country Club is now a substantial 4 star Lodge with great sports facilities, restaurants and bars. It is also home to one of world’s most novel golf courses and a firm favourite with past clients on golfing holidays in South Africa.
We feature Hans Merensky in a couple of our Kruger Golf Safari Itineraries, which combine a few rounds of golf with a stay at a safari lodge. We can tailor the itinerary to achieve the balance which suits you best. There are a number of other courses in the region including Nelspruit and Leopard Creek.
For golfers, Hans Merensky is a fantastic course, that borders the Kruger National Park. You can expect to encounter giraffe, zebra, antelope and even hippos and crocs. Don’t worry they’ve seen many a slice off the 1st before! There is also a range of practice facilities including a driving range.
Most people visiting will be here for the golf, but non golfers can relax by one of the 3 pools, play tennis, use the gym, or participate in one of the many excursions offered, including game drives. There is a beauty salon with some treatments and hairdressing for some pampering, or chill out at the pool bar, which becomes very lively in the evenings.
Rooms at Hans Merensky
There a number of room options from double bedrooms in the hotel area to 2 bedroom chalets on the golf course with full self-catering facilities. Not the most luxurious of accommodation, reflecting the 4 star status, but very spacious and definitely of a high standard with en suite bathrooms, TV, air con and all mod cons. Suites have large patio areas outside and it is possible to barbecue your own food.
The Leadwood restaurant is A la Carte most nights, with occasional barbecue nights or buffets. There is also food served at the pool, with its own pizza oven, and bar snacks available from the 19th hole Clubhouse, just a short distance away. Breakfast is served in the Leadwood, under the watchful eyes of the Vervet monkeys, always hoping for a treat.
The spa was built in 2010 around a tranquil water setting. It offers massages and beauty therapies as well as relaxation areas.

ReviewsIn our opinion: In recent years Hans Merensky has targeted the conference market and we have found that our guests have been swamped in the evenings by large numbers of conference delegates who are using the same dining facilities. As a result we have moved away from suggesting Hans Merensky for overnight accommodation, and instead use other lodges nearby. We still recommend the golf course which you will have to yourself most days (except for the animals) but at present we are not using Hans Merensky for Out of Africa clients until we are confident that they will have a better experience.
