Thorntree River Lodge

Set on the banks of the fast flowing Zambezi,  Thorntree River Lodge has blended eco-conscious design with inspiration from local cultures. Reopened in 2017, the  lodge has been rebuilt using local stone and wood and reclaimed railway sleepers.

Shaded under Jackalberry and Red mahogany trees, the al fresco dining area overlooks the river, where a floating deck extends out with its own fire pit. There is an open-plan lounge area in the main building, furnished with plenty of comfy sofas and beanbags. As this is the only spot with wifi, it is always popular and staff are on hand to keep you supplied with drinks.

Rooms at Thorntree River Lodge
There are 10 luxury suites stretched along the river bank with unrivalled views of the Zambezi. The spacious suites are a combination of tented and solid construction with a contemporary glass front overlooking a sunken outdoor seating area, sun deck and plunge pool.  The interiors and furnishings are inspired by the surrounding area, and have been sustainably designed and produced by local artisans. Dramatic artworks adorn the muted blue and grey walls. The en suite bathrooms come complete with indoor and outdoor showers.

Activities
Thorntree’s superb location gives you easy access to all the activities at the Falls including sunset cruises, fishing, kayaking, nature walks, and the awe-inspiring vistas of Africa’s famous waterfall. If that all sounds too much work, simply enjoy  the peace and tranquillity of your surroundings on the river’s edge. The lodge is also a supporter of Rhino Conservation and offers small guided groups tracking white rhino on foot in a bid to educate and spread awareness on their plight.

When you are not out enjoying the greater Zambezi area, relax in the infinity pool down by the river or in your own private plunge pool outside of your room. In the evenings, enjoy nightcaps by the fire pit on the floating deck,  melt away on a relaxing massage in the spa, or work out in the gym.

Sundowners on the river is the traditional way to end the day. Sit back and enjoy the sunset on Thorntree’s private boat, an iced drink in hand, and listening to the cry of an African fish eagle and the comical snorting of nearby hippos as they wallow in the river.

A stay at Thorntree River Lodge includes a visit to a nearby local village for those interested in learning about the heritage, customs and day-to-day life of local communities.

Dining
Breakfast is buffet style with supplementary hot dishes available as well.  Meals are à la carte, with two or three options to choose from at lunch and dinner. The style of cuisine is international and includes daily homemade dishes such as butternut squash soup, beef fillet and smoked chicken salad. Meals are served on the main deck, but on request you can choose private dining in your room or for a really romantic feel, on the floating deck. Special dinners can also be arranged on a boat.
