On the pristine Maputaland coast of KwaZulu Natal, Thonga Beach Lodge lies in the heart of iSimangaliso World Heritage Park. A magical hidden location with unspoilt beaches, coastal forests and shimmering lakes.
Thonga Beach Lodge captures the essence of a charming rustic Robinson Crusoe hideaway with individual chalets tucked away in the coastal dune forest. The lodge and guest rooms are raised on wooden stilts to ensure minimal impact to the environment with maximum comfort.
The dining area is a large thatched rondavel that opens on to an expansive wooden deck, where guests can enjoy the warm weather and the lodge’s sumptuous meals. Most meals will be served al fresco, or, guests can head for the beach and dine by candlelight on the shores of the Indian Ocean.
The lounge, with its comfortable couches and a cosy fireplace, is the perfect place to unwind after a day at the beach. Located on the upper deck, above the dining area, it offers spectacular views of the beach as well as the incredible forest surrounding the lodge. It’s the ideal spot to relax with a sundowner or catch a breathtaking sunrise over a steaming mug of coffee.
To beat the midday heat, guests can take it easy beside the lodge’s swimming pool or enjoy a delicious cocktail at the bar with its unique “ocean” bar counter. For those needing a little pampering, the lodge also has a rejuvenation centre where guests can revitalise body, mind and soul.
Rooms at Thonga Beach Lodge
The spacious, thatched suites are hidden in the coastal dune forest and raised on wooden stilts to ensure no harm comes to the sensitive dune soils. Inspired by Thonga architecture, the rooms have been carefully positioned to guarantee guest privacy. Some rooms offer sea views, whilst others are set within the dune forest. All have private balconies and are air conditioned. Luxuriously decorated, the rooms exude a romantic ambiance. The en-suite rooms have a bathroom with bath, shower and twin vanity.
Superb snorkelling is within strolling distance of the Lodge in the clear warm waters of the Indian Ocean. With over 1250 fish species scuba diving is phenomenal and the dive boat launches directly from Thonga’s beach with instructors to assist divers of all levels.
Divers can enjoy the Open Ocean Experience, spotting shoals of game fish, schools of Bottle nose dolphins with whale sharks and turtles in the summer; and Humpback whales in the winter.
Morning guided kayaking trips or glorious sundowners boat trips are offered nearby on the shores of Lake Sibaya.
November to February, guests can witness the rare sight of turtles laying their eggs or hatchlings returning to the ocean and get involved with this on going conservation project.

ReviewsIn our opinion: It is quite a hike to reach Thonga but once you are there, you will agree it is worth it! It is a magical place and we recommend at least 3 nights stay here, possibly combining it with a safari in the Hluhluwe region.
