One of the newer additions to the golf courses of the Garden Route, Pinnacle Point is a spectacular links style course the winds along the cliffs at Mossel Bay. It is just a 40 minute drive from George Airport. “One of the most stunning golf courses I have ever seen”, was Darren Clarke’s verdict. The Irishman was involved in the design of the course and has a house on the property. It is a ‘must play’ course for a South Africa golfing holiday on the Garden Route.
The course has literally been carved out of the cliffs with tee boxes and greens separated by gorges in which the waves crash below. For those that are intimidated by the long par 3 drives to the green, you have the option to lay up, playing to the side of the cliff, and around the ravines. This is real, ‘who dares wins’ stuff!
The 9th and 18th are both cliff-hugging fairways, the 9th is a par 3 and the 18th a slightly less adrenalin-pumping par 5, but with an option to cut the corner if it comes down to the wire. Over-shoot the green on either hole and watch your ball disappear into the waves crashing below.
A magical course but it has been going through the mill with the first owners going bankrupt and problems with the original grass not taking properly. It seems to be back on track now with lush fairways and good quality greens. Overseas visitors are welcome every day of the week. It is a firm favourite with Out of Africa customers, but our advice is: take lots of ammunition!
The clubhouse provides stunning views of the coast line and the course below, as it unwinds along the cliffs. The upper restaurant serves half way house breakfasts as well as lunches, snacks and drinks. The main building is located at the end of a long winding drive from the main gate, so best to allow an additional ten minutes to get there, this is not a drive you want to do at speed!
Golf carts are included in the green fees as it would be impossible to play the course without one. There are some long drives between greens and the next tee box.
Pinnacle Point is located just outside the town of Mossel Bay, there is accommodation on the course in the form of self catering apartments or in the nearby town. The course is a 40 minute drive from Fancourt Hotel & Country Club which makes it possible to combine a stay there with playing at Pinnacle Point. There is also a casino and hotel on the property next door.

ReviewsIn our opinion: In the right weather, Pinnacle Point is a truly amazing course and enjoyable but if the wind is blowing it, it doesn't come much tougher than this. Everyone should play it once and hope the weather gods are being kind. Look out for whales breaching in the ocean below. (July-Nov)
