Botswana Safaris

Described as the jewel of Africa, Botswana offers a completely different safari experience. With vast wetlands such as the Okavango Delta and arid desert of the Kalahari Reserve, you are able to see a huge diversity of animal species in one country. To get the best from a safari holiday in Botswana we recommend a 2 or 3 centre stay.

The Okavango Delta is the most well known of the safari destinations in Botswana. A 7,000 square mile complex of waterways and wetlands, the Delta forms one of Africa’s ecological wonders. No other place has such a diversity of wildlife. Take a Mokoro canoe safari through the channels to spot game at the water’s edge, and the stunning bird life that inhabits the area. Return to your lodge and sip sundowners on the deck, and watch as the afternoon wildlife matinee starts to unfold right in front of you.

In the north, Chobe and Linyanti provide excellent wildlife viewing with incredible numbers of game, especially elephant. Both areas also feature water, but the viewing is more land based than in the Delta. These areas are ideal to combine with Victoria Falls, as Chobe National Park is only a short distance across the border.

A real contrast to the Delta, but no less enjoyable, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve offers a fascinating insight into man and animal’s ability to survive in the harshest environment. Enjoy a morning out with the San Bushmen as they demonstrate their survival and hunting skills. Look out for the famous Black-mane Kalahari lion and the adorable meerkats – a great favourite.

The Makgadikgadi Pans are large salt pans which stretch for 10,000km. During the summer rains these vast dry areas undergo a transformation as countless water birds are drawn to the shallow pools. Enormous flocks of flamingo and pelican gather on the newly formed lakes, signalling the beginning of the dramatic wildebeest and zebra migration. In the dry season, you can try a different type of safari, exploring the Pans by Quad Bike, to view the prehistoric sites and fossil lakes of the area.
