Grootbos Nature Reserve

Hidden high above the famous Walker Bay between the towns of Hermanus and Gansbaai, lies South Africa’s premier marine and floral destination, Grootbos Nature Reserve. This tranquil setting is an ideal base for anyone on a holiday in South Africa wishing to explore the Garden Route or experiencing whale watching at nearby Hermanus.

Situated less than 2 hours from Cape Town between mountains and sea, Grootbos offers stylish 5 star accommodation, international fusion cuisine, warm hospitality and nature-based tourism activities such as riding, whale watching and hiking. Highly skilled field guides with intimate knowledge of the local history, fauna and flora host all the activities. Grootbos is a nature lover’s paradise, a multi-award-winning lodge that benchmarks nature tourism with its collection of eco sensitive guided trips that will take one into the intricate world of plants and animals both on land and at sea.

Rooms
Grootbos has 2 lodges, Garden and Forest. Both constructed from stone, thatch and fine timber. The rooms are light and airy. Each suite, covering a minimum of 75 m2, is privately located and has its own lounge, one or two elegantly furnished bedrooms and bathrooms. The open plan lounge is complete with a freestanding fireplace for cozy evenings. The decor is tasteful yet understated with spectacular views of Walker Bay. Enjoy relaxing moments of sunbathing or bird watching from the private deck.

Dining
Cuisine is an art form at Grootbos, you can be assured of a sumptuous meal, whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner time. Food is taken very seriously here!

Fish caught on the day, succulent meats and fresh home grown vegetables are enhanced with flavours from the flourishing herb garden. Prepared with innovative flair, presented with a touch of brilliance and colour, and served in a restaurant with unbeatable views. The award winning wines of the Cape provides the ideal accompaniment to the gourmet cuisine.

Activities
Whale watching, nature drives, quad biking, birding, guided walks, horse riding, guided visits to some of the ancient cave dwellings that are found along the coastline, and beach picnics are just some of the activities offered. For the adrenaline junkies there is the opportunity to try cage diving with Great White sharks from nearby Gansbaai.

Grootbos is family-friendly with a number of special activities for youngsters offered each day.

We also recommend Grootbos for clients on South Africa golf holidays, who can use the lodge as a base to play at Arabella and Hermanus Golf Clubs, making it an ideal stop over for a Garden Route Golf Itinerary.

Reviews

In our opinion: Grootbos is a lovely tranquil setting, each room set apart and surrounded by indigenous plants. If you are looking for some relaxation and peace & quiet, Grootbos is for you. It has plenty of activities of a more gentle nature, such as nature drives to see the flora of the region, but it is not a safari destination in the true sense. It is a bird and plant lovers paradise!
