Mowani Mountain Camp

Mowani Mountain Camp is one of the most popular and luxurious lodges in the Damaraland region of Namibia. Mowani is taken from the word M’Wane, meaning ‘Place of God’. The camp is nestled amongst the giant boulders in a vast, unspoilt wilderness, between the Ugab and Huab Rivers. The lodge is perfect for game drives in search of Desert-adapted elephants and Black rhino.

The stunning location is host to fascinating geological formations and archaeological sites such as the Twyfelfontein engravings, a petrified forest and San rock art. Self-drive visitors can explore the area in their own vehicle or join one of the guided excursions offered by the lodge.

The main complex consists of a reception, bar, dining room and a lounge that overlooks the waterhole. There is a small but welcome swimming pool to refresh yourself in.

Rooms at Mowani Mountain Camp
Accommodation is in beautifully-designed thatched dome-shaped structures which mirror the granite boulders amongst which they are built. The rooms are open to the front with stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The more expensive superior rooms are located higher up with more impressive views. Each room has a private deck, en suite bathroom and air conditioning.

Activities
Activities from the lodge include excursions to the rock engravings at Twyfelfontein, an archaeological site with more than 2,500 engravings and paintings. It is considered it be one of the finest examples of rock engravings in Southern Africa. A morning’s nature drive in search of the elusive desert-adapted elephant and rare black rhino is a must.

The more adventurous might prefer one of the walking trails, between the boulders and mopane trees in the valley below the lodge. The route takes hikers to a small waterhole, and a stunning viewpoint. Not to be missed, however, are the spectacular sunsets from the camp sundowner spot. Situated close by are other main attractions of the area, including the Burnt Mountain and the Organ Pipes, all within easy driving distance.

Getting There

  • The nearest 'town' is Khorixas, but driving is slow going on the partially tarred/gravel roads. Allow about 3 hours from Etosha on the C39 and then C35. Take the D2616 Turning signposted to Mowani. You can also follow the C35 to/from Swakopmund to the same turn off. Stop for petrol where you can.
