La Plume Guest House

La Plume Guest House is a 1902 Victorian homestead on a working ostrich, alfalfa and wine farm. Set in the tranquil Olifantsrivier Valley about 15km from the centre of Oudtshoorn town, La Plume commands spectacular views of the Swartberg Mountains. It has been a firm favourite as a stop-over, with our clients travelling along the Garden Route on holidays in South Africa.

A warm welcome awaits visitors at this charming guest house, where your hostess Karin has combined old world charm with modern comforts, into an award-winning, accredited guest house offering exceptional country style and refined living.

Accommodation
The guest rooms all have private entrances, sunny verandahs and are furnished with elegant, comfortable antiques. The rooms are not numbered; the rooms bear names – different types of ostrich feathers grace the doors to rooms, each room decorated with an individual unique signature of colour and furnishing style.

A family cottage with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a kitchenette is available for groups or a family wanting space as well as privacy. This cottage can be turned into two separate luxury suites.

Dining
La Plume serves breakfast and dinners. Enjoy a ‘full English’ or continental style cereals and fruits for breakfast in peaceful rural surroundings. In the evening indulge yourself in the romantic ambiance of candlelit dinners with traditional ostrich fillet and other home cooked delicacies. In the afternoon a High Tea is served on the lawn, a welcome treat after a day of sight seeing or travelling.

Activities
La Plume is a working ostrich, wine, cattle and alfalfa farm. Guests can enjoy a tour of the farm with owner Bartel, to see first hand the activities on a commercial farm.  The tour is informative and gives an insight into rural life in the Klein Karoo.

There’s bird watching and hiking among the fynbos and rare succulents, mountain biking and cycling. Take leisurely walks in complete safety and solitude around the farm.

We can also arrange for you to take a balloon flight or visit the world’s only meerkat conservation program where you can walk with these little “earth people” and be at one with nature. These visit occur early morning or late afternoon and have to be pre booked. They are not suitable for young children.

Oudtshoorn has much to offer visitors on holiday in South Africa and we recommend a couple of nights here if time permits. It is a great way to break the journey from Hermanus onto Knysna as part of a Garden Route itinerary.

If you prefer guest house style accommodation to larger hotels, we can offer a number of similar properties along the Garden Route, such as Schulphoek in Hermanus and Leisure Isle Lodge in Knysna. For a few nights of safari at the end, we suggest the Pumba Private Game Reserve.

La Plume is an easy drive to the natural hot springs, nature and wildlife reserves, the Cango Caves, ostrich show farms and wine estates. (Ask Karin to prepare a picnic basket to take on your excursions.)

You will be unable to resist the sparkling pool set among lush lawns and with never-ending views when you return after a day’s activity. From time to time, La Plume offers an evening where guests can view of the ‘High Five’ – stargazing with a southern sky expert from the verandah.

In our opinion: Despite being a short drive from the main town we think La Plume is one of the best locations for a visit to Oudtshoorn. It has a traditional feel with antique decor and great food. Ostrich doesn't come fresher than this!
