Royal Cape Golf Club

Formed in 1885, the Royal Cape Golf Course is the oldest club in South Africa and the whole of Africa. It is a championship course of some repute and has hosted the prestigious South African Open 11 times. It is one of our most popular courses for South Africa Golf Holidays and a must-play course whilst staying in Cape Town. Once you visit this flat parkland golf course you’ll see why. The tree-lined fairways are narrow with many water hazards and bunkers. The golf course is always well groomed and has Table Mountain views from just about every hole. At 6065m (6632yds) off the competition tees, it is one of the longest courses in the Cape.

The club is very accommodating with international visitors on South Africa golf holidays, and welcomes non members most days except weekends.

There is plenty of water on the course, particularly at the corner of the 3rd, 4th and 5th and then again around the 14th, 15th and 16th. The 4th and 15th are beautiful par 3’s, the 15th in particular requiring a finely judged shot over the water which encroaches right up to the edge of the green.

The most difficult holes are the 3rd, a 450m par 4, and the dog leg 14th with water surrounding the green & some strategically-placed trees.

The club has a nostalgic air about it, with traditional style facilities, (or slightly old-fashioned, depending on your point of view) but it is a slice of history. The corridors are decorated with old photos taken at the numerous competitions hosted by the club. Although the course has been over taken by more modern design layouts with flashy club houses, it still provides an thoroughly enjoyable test of golf that is only 20 minutes from most central Cape Town hotels.

It can be difficult to get a golf cart at Royal Cape, but there are pull trolleys and caddies. If you need a golf cart, let us know in advance so we can pre book one for you. The course is flat and easy to walk, but long. Caddies are available.

Out of Africa Travel & Golf recommends the Royal Cape for South Africa golf holidays, it offers a chance to play on a traditional style, mature golf course.
