The 18-hole championship course sits on the Mau Escarpment in the Great Rift Valley. At 7,000 ft elevation the course commands stunning vistas of Lake Naivasha, Mount Longonot, the Kinangop Range and Aberdare Mountains. The Great Rift Valley Lodge and Golf Resort is famous for one the longest holes in Kenya – the par 5 – 17th ‘signature hole’ at 598 metres (654 yards) long! The lush golf course has contoured greens built to USGA specs with “tiffgreen” grass. The three tee positions and the fairways are planted to the indigenous Kikuyu grass which remain green and well tended throughout the year.
All of the golf holes are feature bunkers, and there are five water hazards on the course. The air is fresh, temperatures range between 16º – 34º c making the course pleasant to walk. There are golf carts or caddies available. It rains generally at night and due to its proximity to the equator, it is possible to play golf 12 hours a day throughout the year.
Golfers give right of way to the wild animals who have taken residence on the lush fairways such as gazelles and zebra. Flocks of Black-headed Oriole, Fischers Lovebirds and Egyptian geese sun themselves on the greens without paying any heed to the approaching golfers.
The golf course is ideally located en route from safari, or can be played from lodges around Lake Naivasha. It is also possible to stay at the Great Rift Valley Lodge And Golf Resort. ooms are spacious with a lounge and fireplace and private balconies overlooking the Aberdares, Kenya’s longest mountain massif stretching 160 kilometres, the Kinangop plateau lying a tier below the Aberdares and the plains of Eburru littered with black obsidian stone telling its volcanic past.
