Ille aux Cerfs Golf Club

Designed by the famous golfer Bernhard Langer, the club is reached by a short ferry ride across a lagoon from the Shangri-La Le Tousserok Hotel to the Ille aux Cerfs (Island of Deers). The course covers 38 hectares on the southern half of the private island with the holes running up and down the length of the island. The layout boasts naturally undulating topography, volcanic rock outcrops, lakes and gullies, and a variety of tropical plants and the iconic coconut palms.

All 18 holes of this island golf have views of the ocean – some with glimpses across clearings through the trees; others with holes playing along the shore. The back 9 is the most picturesque as you follow the coastline on the 11th and 12th holes. Expansive white sand bunkers and water set off the natural backdrop of palm trees and vegetation perfectly. At times the fairways can feel very tight and this is not a course that suits big, wayward hitters. Greens are quite small and undulating, requiring accurate approach shots to land, and finish with the ball on the putting surface. This is particularly true of the par 3 greens, especially the 8th which is near impossible for us mere mortal amateur golfers!

If the lapping waves of the surrounding ocean weren’t enough, there is plenty of water on the course with nine lakes in all, and three of the holes requiring tee shots across sea inlets to the fairways. It’s a really stunning setting, you can’t fail to be impressed.
