Located on the outskirts of Johannesburg and just 10 minutes from the O.R. Tambo International Airport, the Serengeti Golf & Wildlife Estate is the latest creation by the Jack Nicklaus design team in South Africa. Opened for play in 2009, it’s championship course has already hosted the SA Open twice.
There are two layouts at the Serengeti Estate, an 18-hole par 72 course named the Masai Mara, which has a rugged grassland and links-look and feel, and the newly opened 18-hole Whistling Thorn, Par 3 ‘mashie’ course.
As with all of the other Nicklaus designs, Serengeti is characterised by generous and invitingly wide fairways, prolific bunkering and the inevitable water hazards. At 7096m from the championship tees, the Masai Mara course is a monster and it is no secret that it has been designed to cater for the big ticket professional tournaments.
The signature 8th hole is a par 5 with water down both sides of the fairway culminating in a Sawgrass-like island green. Only the very best players can hope to make the putting surface in regulation, mere mortals will need to lay up before a final pitch to the dance floor!
Your green fee includes complimentary use of the driving range.
The Whistling Thorns course is designed so that newcomers to the game get a fun yet challenging introduction to golf, while seasoned golfers can use the par-3 course to hone their short game skills. The Whistling Thorns course can be played in 3 hours, perfect as a practice round or for a bit of fun on a summer’s evening.
