Serengeti Golf & Wildlife Estate

Located on the outskirts of Johannesburg and just 10 minutes from the international airport, the  Serengeti Golf & Wildlife Estate is the latest creation by the Jack Nicklaus design team in South Africa. Opened for play in 2009, it has already hosted the SA Open twice.

There are two layouts at the Serengeti Estate, an 18-hole course named the Masai Mara, which has a rugged grassland and links-look and feel, and a 9-hole course named the Whistling Thorn, which is currently undergoing a make over to convert it into an 18 hole, Par 3 championship course. The Whistling Thorn course is scheduled to open sometime this year (2021).

As with all of the other Nicklaus designs, Serengeti is characterised by generous and invitingly wide fairways, prolific bunkering and the inevitable water hazards. At 7096m from the championship tees, the Masai Mara course is a monster and it is no secret that it has been designed to cater for the big ticket professional tournaments.

The signature 8th hole is a par 5 with water down both sides of the fairway culminating in a Sawgrass-like island green. Only the very best players can hope to make the putting surface in regulation, mere mortals will need to lay up before a final pitch onto the dance floor!
