Oubaai Golf Course

A five minute drive from Fancourt and the town of George, is the Ernie Els collaboration, Oubaai Golf Club. It is a links-style course with stunning panoramic views of the sea. We thoroughly recommend a round at Oubaai for visitors on South Africa golf holidays. There is accommodation on offer at the course in the 5* Oubaai Hotel; or otherwise there is plenty of Bed & Breakfast accommodation in George which is about 5 minutes drive; or at other courses nearby.

First impressions of the open, flat fairways make you think that this is not the most challenging of courses but be prepared to be pleasantly surprised, it offers a really good test of golf even if you are not a long hitter.  The stylish clubhouse facilities and friendly, helpful staff have helped to put Oubaai on the map as a ‘must-play’ golf course on the Garden Route. As you play the course your views and outlooks take in forest, sea, river and the distant Outeniqua Mountains.

The lush fairways are a delight to play from, but the greens are tricky and lightning-fast. There are a large number of bunkers on the course, some of which are monsters and some strategic thinking is required to pick your way round without falling foul of these hazards. Course management is as important as the shot-making at Oubaai. The fairways are lined by thick wispy grasses which are all but impossible to make any distance from, should you hit an errant tee shot. Best to take the medicine, get back onto the fairway and then try to salvage a par.

The dramatic clubhouse location overlooks the 16th, 17th holes and the 18th green that winds back along the coast towards the 19th hole.  The modern facilities include an excellent restaurant and bar and full changing facilities. Open air terraces offer panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and the Gwaing River Valley as you sup a well-earned beer or glass of wine.

There is a hotel on the estate offering accommodation for anyone wanting to play Garden Route golf and still be close to George. Now that it is no longer necessary to stay at Fancourt, in order to play the courses there (except The Links) the Oubaai Hotel is a good 5* option for anyone wanting to play different courses in the area. Fancourt is a mere 5 minutes drive from Oubaai.

In our opinion…Oubaai is often over looked in favour of its high profile neighbour, which is shame. It is quieter and offers good value for money. A 'should-play' course for anyone travelling along the Garden Route on a golfing holiday in South Africa.
