Stellenbosch Golf Club

Stellenbosch, the historic, bustling winelands town, boasts a beautiful home championship course, the Stellenbosch Golf Club. This mature parklands course is characterised by narrow fairways, closely guarded by large trees and thick rough. New greens and additional bunkers were added to make this course even more challenging. Stellenbosch Golf Club has hosted both the South African Open and the South African Masters.

With so many courses to choose from in the area, Stellenbosch is often overlooked by visitors on South Africa Golf Holidays. It is a busy municipal member’s club with very reasonable green fees but the club extends a warm welcome to overseas golfers and is popular with visiting golfers.

This course is surrounded by vineyards and is overlooked by the Simonsberg and Helderberg Mountains creating a stunning environment for a round of golf. At times you will find yourself playing around vineyards, which border the fairways. The par-four 6th is one such case.

The par-five 14th, is played up a tight steep fairway that is well guarded by trees on both sides and the green is hidden around the corner of a dogleg. The signature hole is the par-three, 7th which plays down hill from an elevated tee box. The 9th is another par 3, but this time playing uphill. If you have opted to push a trolley, it can be a struggle to get up the hill, but don’t worry the halfway house is just a few more steps away where ice cold towels, water and drinks are waiting for you!

In 2018 some of the holes on the course underwent a transformation with some of the fairways reshaped and new lakes dug. The work has now been completed, and whilst the lakes are more for water catchment than playing hazards, the course looks much improved.

With so many golf clubs and wonderful accommodation in the winelands, it is a great place to base yourself and enjoy the courses. Nearby Stellenbosch town has a number of guest houses that we recommend such as Summerwood, or the larger Village at Spier Estate with its restaurants and working wine farm.

In our opinion:
The course has been rejuvenated in recent years, it is always in top condition with lush fairways. There are lots of interesting holes with water, waste bunkers and dog legs adding to the challenge. The clubhouse has a good menu and extensive wine list at reasonable prices.
