Hamiltons Tented Camp

Located on the Mluwati private concession within the Kruger National Park, Hamilton’s Tented Camp sits in the heart of the park with exclusive rights to traverse 10,000 hectares of bush veld. As one of the first private concessions in the Kruger National Park, the owners have worked tirelessly to ensure the sustainability of this pristine wilderness that for over 100 years has been a sanctuary for over 114 reptiles, 34 amphibians and 147 mammal species, including Africa’s Big Five.

The camp takes its name from Colonel Stephenson Hamilton, a Scot who became the first warden of the Sabi Nature Reserve, later known as the world famous Kruger National Park.  Hamiltons reflects these early days of safari adventure, following the fine tradition of luxury in true “Out of Africa” style, with silver service dining, candelabras and indulgent Victorian style both tubs.

Rooms at Hamiltons Tented Camp
Guests are accommodated in six exceptionally private luxury elevated tents overlooking the N’waswitsontso River. From your own private deck, you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the bush that derives its existence from the river.

Traditional fittings and features such as old brass light switches, steamer trunks with vintage labels revealing exciting journeys and sepia-stained photographs enhance the tradition and style of this ‘turn-of-the-century’ luxury safari tent; modern comforts such as electricity, air conditioning and an outdoor shower the only clues that we live in a different time.

The décor is light and neutral; teak furniture and floors, gilded mirrors and crisp white linens deliver a classy luxury tent experience enhanced by the panoramic bush and river views that begin at the edge of the deck.

Dining
Dine as you would have in the 1900s. Hamiltons Tented Camp ensures, whatever the occasion, meals are a classy affair. From fine crystal wine glasses to pewter silver water jugs, revel in the dining traditions of old in spectacular bushveld surroundings.

Butlers dressed in traditional colonial uniforms anticipate your every need. Dine on deck in relaxed surroundings or enjoy a bush picnic. The choice is yours. From champagne breakfasts to High Tea with a delicious selection of cakes and pastries baked freshly at the lodge, even the most discerning foodie will adore Hamiltons international and African flavours.

Game Viewing
Experience a morning and evening safari during your stay at Hamiltons Tented Camp. Witness the excitement of the first rains; the terrapins playing in river pools, the call of the Pied Kingfisher and steady chirping of sociable tree frogs.

Savour the rich smells of the bush, hear the shrill calls of the Magpie Shrike and see the wind blowing through the feather grass dotting the savannah plains.

Keen birders will delight in the hundreds of bird species that call Kruger home. Over 500 species, in fact many of which occur in the Mluwati Concession including the Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill, Crested Barbet and Burchell’s Glossy Starling.

A safari at Hamiltons Tented Camp will reveal new scents, curious sounds and the beauty of an extraordinary African landscape to delight your senses.

Activities
Twice daily game drives– early morning and late afternoon / evening game drives in an open 4×4 safari vehicle traverse an area of 14 700 hectares. Track the Big Five, as well as a rich variety of other game, in the company of an armed ranger and tracker. Strict vehicle limits at animal sightings ensure the exclusivity of your wildlife experience and careful off-road driving positions you for the best photo opportunities. Night game drives provide a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the predators, particularly the leopard for which Ngala is renowned.

Interpretive bush walks– in between game drives, take a leisurely walk within easy reach of your lodge and experience the sights, smells and sounds of the African bush. An armed ranger will accompany you and will share his vast knowledge of the local fauna and flora. Take in the intimate details of your surroundings, from the intricate patterns of a spider’s web to the bright plumage of the local birds and the sharp alarms calls of a dozen small creatures. Wonder at the delicate beauty of the leopard orchid, which flowers in the forks of tree boughs in early summer, taste the fruit of the marula tree or examine the meringue-like nests of the foamnest frog suspended from branches on the edge of pools of water.

Due to its remoteness, there is no cell phone reception at the lodge but guest can be escorted to an area nearby where it is possible to pick up a signal, if the need arises!

Reviews

In our opinion: A lovely luxury tented camp in the East African style. Indoor and outdoor showers, air conditioned suite with all mod-cons - this is our idea of 'getting close to nature'!
